My name is Astrid Kalmeijer and I founded Shabazi in 2010. I have been designing jewelry since 2000.

My eye for design and craft was shaped at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, where I obtained a Degree in Fashion Design. This was developed further during a 1 year Masters Degree at the prestigious Domus Academy in Milan, followed by a further year working in the city.

My work has gained recognition through various design competitions and achieved commendation by several respected designers, notably Alessandro Mendini.

After a substantial period of time working in the fashion industry, I felt the urge to get back to basics and to create unique pieces with my own hands. It was then I discovered my passion for designing with silver and gemstones. Working from my studio close to the creative city of Amsterdam I like to reflect the pleasure I get from creating in the jewelry I design.

Shabazi itself is named after a famous street in the artisan district of the Mediterranean seaport of Tel Aviv. Married to a native of the city, I have visited many times and been inspired by its’ vibrancy, the passion of its’ people and the sights and sounds of this exotic place. It has provided me with the inspiration to create my own original jewelry collection.

The process begins by taking a flat piece of silver and selecting the particular gemstones to set within it. Each stone possesses a unique set of properties. Whether thats the deep sensuality of amethyst or the translucent serenity of moonstone. As designer I want my work to enhance these properties and create a unique and special piece for its future wearer. When worn the jewelry should then compliment the personality of its owner, over time becoming imbued with personal memories and sentimental value having its own special story to tell.
