Caring for your Shabazi Jewelry
Shabazi selects materials with care. All our silver jewelry is made of Sterling 925 silver which will tarnish naturally. Below are a few tips to help you maintain the beauty of your shabazi jewelry. If you have any further questions please contact me.
Wearing Jewelry
Try to protect all jewelry from sharp blows, chemicals, sunlight and extreme temperatures. Chlorine and related chemicals can severely discolor and damage jewelry as well as loosen stones and settings. Put jewelry on after using cosmetics, hair spray or perfumes to avoid contact with substances and chemicals which may cause damage. Remove rings when working with your hands, such as performing household tasks, sports, gardening and using abrasive particles.
Storing Jewelry
Store jewelry separately so it will not scratch other jewelry. Storing beaded necklaces flat is highly recommended to reduce stretching. Storing your jewelry in plastic bags with an interlocking seal when not in use slows the tarnishing process.
Cultured Pearls are best kept in a chamois or silk pouch because of their softness. Don’t store your pearls with other jewelry, as they can be scratched easily when metal or gemstones rub against them. Pearls need light occasionally. Do not store them in a box for long periods. Never store Pearls in plastic bags!
Cleaning Jewelry & Gemstones
Carefully wipe jewelry with a soft chamois (wash-leather) or flannel cloth after each wearing to remove oils and salts. Sterling silver requires occasionally cleaning. Never use chlorine bleach or toothpaste to clean your jewelry. A mild soap and water solution (a small amount of liquid soap, without lemon, to a half cup of warm water) used with a soft brush is effective for many silver jewelry care needs. Afterwards rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely before storing.
Be careful with commercial jewelry cleaning products as they may contain certain chemicals which can damage certain gems. Although soap and water is the best choice for most gems and silver jewelry, do not use soap and water with amber, coral, emerald, jade, kunzite, lapis lazuli, opal, and turquoise.
A home solution of one part mild detergent (without lemon!), one part household ammonia, and three parts water is also effective for many jewelry cleaning needs. Dry the jewelry with a lint-free towel. This method of cleaning is especially desirable for alexandrite, amethyst, quartz, andalusite, aquamarine, citrine, diamond, garnet, iolite, moonstone, ruby, sapphire, spinel, tanzanite, topaz, tourmaline, and zircon.
Cleaning Jewelry & Pearls
Carefully wipe with a soft chamois (wash-leather) or cotton flannel cloth after each wearing to remove oils and salts. A soft lint-free cotton cloth can also be used. It can be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away. Never clean your pearls with solutions that contain ammonia or harsh detergents. An abrasive cloth or cleaning material can wear away the nacre coating or cause a colour change!
Adhere to these simple tips and you’ll be enjoying your shabazi jewelry for years to come.
